Soil Remediation Company for Leaking Oil Tanks
Soil remediation, or soil cleanup, in NJ is the process of removing contaminated soil from an effected area, filling the space with certified clean soil, and disposing of the waste in a proper facility. This project will come about when a home or business owner removes an old underground oil tank, often in conjunction with a sale of the associated property since buyers do not want to take on the financial and environmental responsibility of taking care of the problem themselves. The problem arises when it becomes apparent that the underground storage tank (UST) has leaked oil into the surrounding soil and environment. The oil tank removal process is regulated and monitored by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) according to state and federal laws (regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency). There are appointed officials for each municipality that oversee the oil tank removal process and will have the final word on whether or not the soil has been contaminated enough to make remediation necessary.
How Soil Remediation Works
NJ Soil Remediation Process
When an underground heating oil tank is removed, the appointed inspector will check to see if there are signs that a leak has occurred. There may be noticeable oil in the surrounding soil and/or holes in the corroded tank. These signs are usually enough to require further investigation. First, soil samples will be sent out to certified testing facilities where their EPH (extractible petroleum hydrocarbons) levels are checked. If the results show the soil is contaminated more than the allowable limit, then the soil to be remediated, or cleaned up. This process is monitored by the NJDEP, and the property owner will need to hire a certified firm to excavate all contaminated soil. Soil samples from different areas surrounding the excavation site are then sent out for testing again to verify that the soil has been properly remediated. If the soil is then deemed to be clean, the company will then fill the hole with clean unsullied soil. Once necessary paperwork is completed and all remediation efforts have satisfied NJDEP standards, a No Further Action letter is issued and the job is complete. Our company completes the entire soil remediation process from start until this end point in 28 days or less.
